Everyone has a different budget for when they travel. But everyone likes the word free. Here are some things to do for free in Copenhagen.
Things to Do For Free in Copenhagen
Admire the Bicycles
Ok, so renting a bike yourself isn’t free, but admiring the thousands that are around the city is.
I particularly loved the variety of styles and colours.
The Little Mermaid
Whatever else you do in Copenhagen a visit to this iconic statue is compulsory. She is small and underwhelming and you will have to battle the throngs of tourists to get a decent photo but the walk along the harbour is still a lovely way to spend a couple of hours.
Amalienborg Palace
No visit to Copenhagen is complete without a visit to the royal residence. Enter the square and admire the four surrounding buildings and the huge statue of King Frederik V. If you arrive around 2pm you might even get to see the changing of the guard.
Tip: Do not touch any of the royal buildings or you will be yelled at by an armed royal guard.
Free Walking Tour
Head to RÃ¥dhuspladsen and the steps of the City Hall. The 11am tour starts after the bells have rung and then for the next 2.5 hours (approx) you’ll be led through the streets of the old town, to Nyhavn and ultimately Amalienborg Palace.
Tip: If Luis is your guide, you’re in for a treat
Walk Around Nyhavn
The area of Nyhavn is only free if you stop to enjoy the walk through the harbour and views of the brightly coloured buildings and the boats on the water.
Tip: If you decide to stop in at one of the cafes, restaurants or bars you will blow your budget
Strøget
Often credited with being the oldest and longest pedestrianised streets in Europe, this is a false statement, but it’s still an impressive area to walk around. Avoid spending any money by simply enjoy a spot of window shopping.
Rosenborg Castle Gardens
For entrance to the actual castle you do need to purchase tickets, but if the weather is as beautiful as it was the day I visited why would you spend time indoors? Enjoy the surrounding gardens for free.
Finding things to do for free in Copenhagen was an enjoyable way of exploring the city. I would recommend it for any destination. Don’t forget, if you purchase a Copenhagen City Card you will find that you can see and do other things for free during your time in the city, You can order a card here.
Have you been to Copenhagen? What free activities did you find in order to make your budget go further?
Let me know in the comments.
