I’ve never been particularly enamored by the notion of going away for Christmas. However, I do quite like the idea of starting a new year in a new location, so here are 6 Winter sun destinations that I would definitely consider visiting.

In Search of Winter Sun

Tenerife

With a flight time of just four hours from London, this is an almost perfect destination for a Winter break. The weather is the number one reason most people flock to Tenerife, with the intention of enjoying almost guaranteed sunshine all year, it is consistently one of Britain’s top winter sun destinations.

Malta

At a glance Malta might not seem like an obvious Winter destination. It’s famous for its stunning Mediterranean coastlines, and traditionally visitors flock to Malta to soak up Summer sunshine and enjoy the warm, clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea which surrounds the archipelago. However, after looking at various recommended destinations Malta is now very much on my radar for a Winter break.

Cape Verde

The period between September and January are the warmest months in Cape Verde, with the average daytime temperature reaching 27˚C and the sun shining for more than eight hours a day. The flight time might be nearer to nine hours but the time difference is only one hour compared to the UK so you won’t be suffering from jetlag.

Dubai

While the UK are likely to be experiencing freezing temperatures, Winter in Dubai commonly has a daily average of around 25ËšC while the nights might drop to 15ËšC. If you’re a beach lover you can still enjoy the sun on the beaches of Dubai, as well as neighbouring Abu Dhabi, without turning into a lobster.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik has been on my travel wish list for a while now, but the unbearable heat and the ridiculous crowds have always put me off going in the Summer. However, knowing that a visit in the Winter would provide a more leisurely opportunity to walk along the old city walls without exhausting heat and crowds of tourists.

Marrakech

It was February when I visited Marrakech, and although the evenings were a little chilly it really was a great time to visit: the streets definitely weren’t empty but there weren’t unmanageable crowds. Plus the reduced costs of flights and accommodation meant a long weekend in Marrakech was a lot cheaper than a trip closer to home.

Where do you go when you’re looking for a spot of Winter sun?

  1. Good ideas. I will be getting away for the winter, not xmas but just after. I just moved back to the UK after living in the USA for many years. Decided that the UK winter is NOT for me so I’m running off to Florida for 8 weeks Jan – March. Great blog! 🙂
