It may be the murder capital of the UK but the fictional county of Midsomer is a wonderful advertisement for some of the most beautiful towns and villages in the South of the country. There have been many filming locations for Midsomer Murders in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, and Hertfordshire, throughout the series.

Filming Locations for Midsomer Murders in Oxfordshire

Having been on UK TV screens since 1997, and now shown in over 200 countries across the world it would be hard to believe if you haven’t heard of the series Midsomer Murders. Based on a series of novels by Caroline Graham it is set in the fictional county of Midsomer, however numerous towns and villages have been used as filming locations.

Usually set in pretty chocolate-box villages there is a light-hearted and humorous tone to the episodes despite being traditional whodunnits.

Dorchester-on-Thames

A beautiful, small village located just 8 miles from Oxford. With Roman and Saxon history its interest to historical groups is pretty clear. Despite the growth of towns and cities such as Wallingford and Oxford over the centuries, the location of Dorchester and the main roads meant it become a perfect choice for travellers and so is also ideal for any weekend visitors.

Ewelme

A village in the Chiltern Hills, about 15 miles from Oxford. Ewelme has been used in roughly four episodes, with Rabbits Hill and the cloistered almshouses playing the most prominent feature.

Great Haseley

Great Haseley is a village in South Oxfordshire, roughly eleven miles from Oxford. Having been used in about a dozen episodes of Midsomer Murders, the variety of stone and thatched cottages make it perfect for that chocolate box location.

Henley-on-Thames

23 miles from Oxford, the town of Henley-on-Thames is most commonly known for it’s annual regatta on the River Thames. It is already know for being a very picturesque location and due to appearing in almost a dozen episodes it would make an ideal place to visit.

Nettlebed

Just a few miles outside of Henley-on-Thames, Nettlebed is an interesting village with some fascinating features including a pottery kiln and a smock mill.

Thame

Thame is a market town roughly 13 miles from Oxford, with a variety of carnivals, fairs and fetes occurring throughout the year you could easily think that you have stepped into an episode of Midsomer Murders.

Warborough

Warborough is a village located about 9 miles from Oxford with some pretty and unique houses and cottages and a pub and shop featuring in over 10 episodes it would be well worth a visit.

Watlington

Watlington is a small market town close to the border of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, with shops, pubs, churches and wide open spaces it’s no wonder this was chosen as a filming location.

Oxfordshire is a county known for pretty villages, interesting market towns and open spaces perfect for walks. Plus we do love a pub so make sure, that no matter where you go, you look out for somewhere to stop for a refreshing drink and possibly something to eat.

There are also areas that have their own individual events and celebrations that make visits unique and memorable.
