If there’s one thing I love more than an old country pub, it’s an old country pub with accommodation. The Fleur de Lys in Dorchester-on-Thames is the perfect choice for anyone wanting to explore the area.

Fleur de Lys

Nestled in the quiet medieval village of Dorchester-on-Thames, The Fleur de Lys is a former coaching inn partly dating back to the 16th Century.

Predominately a pub restaurant there is a decent sized dining area and a cosy bar area, outside there is a family-friendly garden, 5 beautifully decorated and furnished rooms make up the accommodation.

Stepping into The Fleur de Lys is almost like stepping back in time. Flagstone flooring, oak beams, open fireplaces all combine to create a cosy and welcoming environment. I absolutely love buildings that have kept the original features, showing the history and character.

Eating Here

Eating at The Fleur de Lys is a real treat, with an interesting and varied menu (which also changes semi-regular basis) with traditional options such as Cumberland sausage and mash (for lunch) and steak and chips (for dinner) and the additional of less traditional but still delicious. I had both lunch and dinner here (don’t judge.) I had the smoked salmon salad (lunch) and duck leg with bacon, mushroom and vegetables (dinner.)

Staying Here

There are five rooms available upstairs in The Fleur de Lys offering accommodation, I booked the Abbey View room. A beautifully but simply decorated and furnished room, with a delightfully comfortable king-sized bed.

The highlight for me though was the bathroom, the word would probably be tiny, but I loved it. A perfect roll-top, claw-footed bathtub, surrounded by original oak beams, a high ceiling but actually a very small room, it was a perfect feature for a building which had such character.

Included in the rate for the room is breakfast – a variety of cereals, toast and cooked breakfasts. Definitely a fantastic way to start the day.

I generally have a very particularly type of accommodation that pleases my soul, and this most definitely fits that description.
