Regardless of where you are from, Tokyo is likely to be very different from what you are used to, especially if you are travelling solo across the city.

How to Enjoy Tokyo as a Solo Traveller

Being Safe

Something you should know which is likely to help you enjoy Tokyo as a solo traveller is that it is an extremely safe city to explore. The Japanese are a very proud nation, and they take a great deal of care to ensure that their country is safe, clean, and successful. Each person takes responsibility for ensuring that ensuring that the country as a whole can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

Obviously, a low crime rate doesn’t mean no crime at all. You should always act responsibly when travelling solo and avoid walking in dark and secluded areas at night.

Getting Around

Despite the scary looking map of stations, taking the train is actually the most reliable and efficient way of navigating the city. You’ll also find that some trains have female-only carriages during peak time, but it is completely up to you whether you use them. Although the people of Tokyo are always busy and rushing around, they are also very helpful if you need assistance.

Eating Out

If you’ve eve been a bit nervous about eating out alone whilst travelling, then Tokyo definitely isn’t going to be an issue. With hundreds of bars, restaurants and cafes available that happily serve solo diners you’ll find that it is completely normal for locals to be dining alone as they grab snacks and meals around their busy lives. This means that you won’t receive strange looks or be made to feel uncomfortable as you enjoy your choice of sushi, ramen or other delicious dishes.

Finding Accommodation

The Japanese are famous for being able to make the most of any small spaces, this means that finding accommodation suitable for a solo traveller is really easy. Whether it’s a capsule hotel, a boutique hotel or something a little bit more luxurious you’ll find somewhere to stay that is comfortable and affordable. The best bit is that because these rooms are designed for solo travellers you won’t have to pay that dreaded single person supplement.

City Tours

One way to discover any city is to take a tour, and with a city as large as varied as Tokyo there is no shortage of tours that you can take. Whether it’s food tasting, visiting shrines, or sightseeing buses you’re bound to find a tour that interests you and will make exploring this city a little easier.

Carry Cash

Despite being the most populated city in the world and its love for technological advancements it may be surprising to learn that a large number of shops and restaurants don’t accept debit or credit cards as payment. This means that you will always need to make sure you have a decent amount of cash to hand.
